Report

Today with the bad weather forecast was always likely to be a low turnout affair. Well on arriving at Whitesprings with Keith, Brian, Ryan & Calvin just before 9am there were only two cars in the car park. With myself not fishing and resting my bad back and not wanting to agrevate it with cold wind and rain all day and Calvin chosing not to fish in the rain either this match would be little more than a practice session. I offered the anglers present to cancel and allow them to pleasure fish but they prefered to go ahead even with such small numbers. As an incentive Vince the owner put up a '£20 Golden Peg' and so I aggreed to organise it and go ahead although if any 'Match Records' were broken they would not count due to the limited number fishing. I mention that now as you will see from the results someone came close to Andrew 'Spud' Murphy's 154lb match record today.

I selected five pegs with known form which was going to give everyone a good days fishing at least, a little compensation for braving it out in those conditions, was I ever so glad to be watching from the warmth and dry of the club house. Pegs were drawn at 9.30am, Geoff Walker drawing 'Golden Peg' 18, Brian for the second time in a row peg 13, Keith on peg 7, Tony on peg 14 and Ryan on peg 21.

From the all in Geoff found the F1's shallow at 11mtrs and took and early lead, Tony and Keith also finding fish shallow while Ryan used todays match as a learning session and persevered with the method feeder as the feeder was not one of his best methods and needed improving. Brian as always not a fan of shallow fishing turned to paste in the margins for his attack, which secured him second last match on the match lake from that peg and would do the same today.

Myself watching from the club house could see Geoff working the shallow method well and clearly leading all the other anglers, the only angler I could not see was Brian as his umbrella was obscuring my view but after a walk along the bank taking to the anglers and taking some pictures and some video of Geoff catching shallow which I will post up later it was clear Geoff was the likely winner and would be relieving Vince of the Golden Peg money for the first time in 2007.

Here are the results of the Pleasure Session / Match

Fish4Wales Spring Series

On the same day another match was organised by fish4wales and it was the third in a series of five, the group have organised a series one match on a different lake at White Springs each month, this was an eagerly waited for match as it was being held on the specimen carp lake

many of the group were keen on having a go for some of the fourty pound plus carp swimming around in white springs

unfortunately with many coming from the valley's, where snow was at it's worst, many of the 18 rods booked in decided to give the day a miss as most of wales woke to see a blanket of snow

only 10 braved the weather, Malc the eventfull winner took some pictures of the snow and posted them on the fish4wales forum along with the results of the day,

unfortunately one of the group was doing rather well and may have been in with a chance of the prizes, but half way through he took a swim in complete freezing conditions and had to leave the venue early

read Malc's report here

Previous week report below

Sunday 12th Mar 2006 there were two matches held, the start of the day didn't look too promising, with many anglers phoning early at the crack of dawn for weather reports

most of south wales was waking up to a blanket of snow, that had suddenly appeared over night, fortunately Swansea was clear of snow and the matches fished well

23 rods turned up for the first of a series of summer league matches on the match lake

(beats me how they could call it summer league with all that snow)

The results of this match

1st place winner Howard Green (Green's Tackle) 24lb 4oz small carp on long pole and pellet fished to the island from peg 7.

2nd place Mike Eyre (Cardiff Nomads) 18lb 3oz

3rd place Luke Sorokin (Neath) 15lb 7oz

Other weights
Chris Hall (Rhymney) 15lb
Rob Jones (Caerphilly) 14lb 9oz
Andrew Crocker (Swansea) 13lb 8oz

In 1983 the Lloyd family bought a marshy area of poor-quality farmland, which they opened in 1987 as a fishing venue, which many anglers would deem the top coarse fishery in Wales and was voted by the Angler's  Mail magazine as Uk's number one venue,

The complex has evolved into a virtual paradise for the holiday angler catering for all styles with six lakes on offer, ranging from a canal to a nine acre lake

It is in the heart of the Welsh countryside in a small village called Pontarddulais just a short distance from the M4 and overlooked by the 900ft Graig Fawr mountain, itself a site of Scientific and Special Interests SSSI and home to all sorts of wildlife, there are regular sightings of Red Kites which often visit the fishery itself.

Below the neat, modern accommodation complex which looks like a bungalow from the entrance carp park but is set into the bank and houses an impressive collection of appartments underneath overlooking the venue, unseen by the naked eye at first glance.

The nearest lake is the New Match Lake, specially set with the pole angler in mind. With central islands, it has been heavily stocked with species suitable for matches including small carp and provides regular heavy bags. The weekly reports on this page comfirms this with 50lb bags in extreme cold icey conditions throughout the winter months

To the left is the Specimen Lake, recently extended by turning two lakes into one. At nine acres, it is packed with little bays, islands and peninsulas with two cabins for those who wish to extend their stay. With several carp up to and over 42lbs are here to challenge anyone

Megan being the fishery record with six anglers landing here below regular Martin Mathews when she weighed in at 45lb 2oz

The leathers going up to 34lbs, theres grass carp reaching 32lbs

there's big kio and ghosties in there too click to view

In the canal lake there's some big perch topping the five pound mark.

Mature surroundings and plenty of nice lily patches make it a real pleasure to fish. A bit further out is The Pit, small but very deep and ideal for leger/feeder fishing for carp, bream and tench. Beyond is The Canal, a 36-pegger with a string of central islands well stocked with carp, tench, bream and orfe as well as the usual silvers below is two carp caught during a match
Only recently dug in 2004, the banks and plants have not matured as yet so there’s plenty of open space. Alongside, another canal stretch has recently been constructed, stocked with the same mix and now open for action.

Finally, there is the Pleasure Lake, a highly productive and popular water with 30 pegs surrounding its unusual shape again two lakes opened into one. The bottom has been deliberately contoured unevenly, thus giving a range of depths and slopes to suit all methods and weather conditions. There's double figure carp to 14lb in this lake in December 2005 three came out in one day, here's a nice one and another from this lake, which has the source water for the fishery being fed by a spring from a well sunk by the steel works in the 1920's

The fishery name 'White Springs' implies, that the whole complex is fed by this pure spring well water and has never been affected by drought and comes from the welsh translation "Pistyllgwyn".

The entire complex and the magority of all pegs are accessible by car making it as convenient as possible for the disabled angler.

A total of 28 people can be accommodated on a self-catering basis and there are six hook-ups for touring caravans. With quick and easy access to the beautiful beaches of the click to view Gower peninsula and west Wales, it is an ideal centre for families to explore the surrounding countryside and the busy shopping centres of Swansea and Llanelli close by.

The much awaited intersite forum match was fished Saturday 22nd April, originally 4 internet sites were involved fishing teams of ten, however one of the English sites pulled out as their members had over 300 miles each way to fish so the White Springs locals put up a team, 39 rods took part and nobody blanked, the four teams fished over the two canal lakes
